Training for a Spartan Race is hard. The race is hard, but it is only one day. Your training needs to be on point and ongoing for awhile before race day. Prepping for the race should also have you prepping nutritionally. Your body needs the right fuel in order to put in the work ahead of, and during, the big day.

NJ Beast is around 5000ft of climbing, runnable but technical terrains. I would focus on trail run and hill run. For strength, I would focus on pull and grip. Rock climbing is helpful. Basic strength training if you have time. CrossFit is fun but not very helpful for OCR. Spartan obstacles are not very difficult, it’s more like a trail run If you are already racing in a 4mm drop like x-talon, the transition is much easier. But if you are running in speedcross, going from 9mm to 0 may take a little more time. I would say listen to your body, don’t go out and try run 12miles on the first day. Like nothing new food wise on race day. The running is the least challenging aspect of a Spartan. You'll not be able to get into a tempo or pace. You'll stop every 1/4 to 1/2 mile for an obstacle. Lots of the running is in creeks or through swapy marshy stuff. People will be in the way, obstacles will be in the way, etc. From beginner trail race and mud run participants to hardcore warriors, tough guys, and marathon runners, they all come out to test themselves on the insane obstacle races! A Spartan Beast is 12-13 miles with about 37 Obstacles. Running is the easy part. I drove about 8 hours down to Spartanburg, South Carolina, and checked into my hotel -immediately seeing people covered in dust and mud. At this point I didn’t know anything about the course so I tried to gage how hard it was by how dirty people looked. For example, Spartan Race holds two “Spartan Death Races” a year. To keep safe, Truax said racers should take their time to complete each obstacle. But that can be hard for people to remember Spartan Race is the world’s premier obstacle course race (OCR).
